Considered among the finest masterpieces of Indian cinema, Meghe Dhaka Tara by Ritwik Ghatak is the tragic story of Neeta, a girl who hails from a refugee family from Bangladesh but is now living in the outskirts of Kolkata. While Neeta sacrifices everything for her family, her achievements are hardly ever recognised. The film was based on an eponymous novel by Shaktipada Rajguru. The film stars Supriya Choudhury, one of the greatest actors of Bengali cinema, Anil Chatterjee, Gita Dey and Bijon Bhattacharya among others. It is a part of a trilogy, the other movies being Komal Gandhar and Subarnarekha.

While it was actually Ritwik Ghatak’s first feature film which and the first art film of Tollywood, Nagarik was released much later in September 1977 in New Empire. Nagarik is the story of Ramu, a fresh graduate looking for a job in post Partition Kolkata. He is from a lower middle class family and the highlight of his life is Uma, the girl he loves. Nagarik is about the lives of refugees from Bangladesh. It is something that Ghatak has explored in all his other films as well. It is melodramatic with a noir feel.
