5 Pre-Wedding Rituals Which Are A Part And Parcel Of All Bengali Weddings

1. Aashirbad

Not too long back, the latest Bengali TV serial Alo Chhaya underwent a leap, with the girls Alo (played by Debadrita Basu who was the lead of the popular serial Joyee) and Chhaya (played by Oindrila Sen) all grown up and attending college. And now it looks like it’s time for them to tie the knot. Alo has agreed to get married. Watch the latest episode of Alo Chhaya to stay updated. Once the match is fixed by both families, this ceremony is planned. In this function, the elders shower their blessings and give the bride and groom gold ornaments or other gifts.

2. Aiburo Bhaat

A traditional variant of a bridal shower or bachelor party, in this ritual, the bride and the groom are invited to lunch by elders of their respective families. What follows is their last feast as a bachelor, and quite some feast that is, consisting of traditional Bengali delicacies.

3. Dodhi Mangal

This ritual marks the start of the fast the couple has to take until their wedding is completed. During this ritual, the bride and groom are fed rice flakes, fruits and sweets so that they can stay energetic until the main function. This is usually done on the day of the wedding. This ritual is also called as Adhibas in some parts of Bengal.

4. Nandi Mukh

Performed on the morning of the wedding, in this ritual the priest chants Vedic incantations and so that the families can pay homage to their forefathers. Followed by a small puja which is done to seek their blessings for the newly-weds.

 

5. Gaaye Holud

This function happens on the day of the wedding. Freshly ground turmeric paste is mixed mustard oil and applied on the groom’s body by his mother and other female relatives. The water that has been kept aside in the morning is used to bathe him. The remaining turmeric paste is sent to the bride’s house along with a saree that is to be worn during the ceremony and a rohu fish. The same ceremony then takes place at the bride’s place.
