Most of the time, if one identifies with a gender that is not limited to the binary cisgendered kind, it is frowned upon by society as if it was a ‘choice’ one can help and not really accepted as ‘normal’. Just imagine the daily struggles of being transgendered in that case! Often ostracised or banished from their communities, transgendered people have to overcome several extreme hurdles to make their place in life. Today, we look at five such inspiring people who managed to do just this, like Laxmi from the hit Bengali TV serial Phirki which explores this very aspect and highlights the importance of #SomanSamman or equal respect towards all. Watch it below.

Sathyasri Sharmila, 36, from Tamil Nadu, recently became the first member of the transgender community to successfully become a lawyer. This didn’t happen easily however, and she has had to face severe discrimination and torture on account of her gender.

2. Joyita Mondal

The first transgendered person to become an MLA, Shabnam Mausi from Madhya Pradesh contested elections from Sohagpur constituency in the Shahdol district of the state. Her family did not support her and she was not able to attend school. Despite this, she managed to learn almost 12 different languages! By no means is that a small feat for anyone at all.
