In the latest Zee Bangla TV serial Krishnakoli, the lead character Shyama (played by Tiyasha Roy) meets with a tragic accident or rather, falls prey to Ashok (played by Vivaan Ghosh) and Disha’s (played by Rimjhim Mitra) nefarious ways. While Nikhil, (played Neel Bhattacharya), her husband, and his family mourn the death of their bouma, a new character emerges who looks just like Shyama did! This character, called Maam, may be a different person altogether but her physical appearance is the spitting image of Shyama. The word ‘Doppelgänger’ comes from the German word meaning ‘double,’ and is now common parlance for one’s lookalike!

Has anyone ever told you that they came across a person who looked just like you? Have you spotted someone who you thought was your friend or celebrity, but it turned out to be a totally different individual? Well, it was probably your doppelgänger! So what are the chances that all of us have at least one of these lookalikes in the world? Quite a bit, actually. Let’s take a look at why.
If you go to a public place such as a park, take a look at all the people going by. Do they look so similar that you can’t tell them apart? Probably not. But if you glance at a a flock of pigeons, this is probably the case. Humans have a lot more variety in their genes than animals, and this is why each individual stands apart from another much more. We have more biological diversity in our appearance than any other species. However, the sheer range in our looks and characteristics doesn’t change the fact that their combinations and permutations are of a finite number. Sure, there is a mindbogglingly vast set of them, but with a global population of more than 7.8 billion, there are bound to be some similarities!
Now this doesn’t mean that our doppelgänger has to look and behave exactly like us. However, it is estimated that for each of us, there are at least seven people in the world who we share a striking resemblance with us! Isn’t that amazing to think about? Perhaps it isn’t totally uncanny when you put it into perspective. Of course, the chances of meeting all your doppelgängers in one go are slim, as they can be from any corner of the world! But to look so much like someone else that the people around you get confused is not terribly unusual. This may be possible even if they’re not your identical twin or remotely related to you. Has this ever happened to you?
Have you met your doppelgänger yet? Tell us about it in the comment section below!
