The perfect style is no style, said legendary karateka and actor Bruce Lee, who single-handedly popularised martial arts in the West through Jeet Kune Do style. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is therefore a form of martial art which incorporates techniques from various combat sports and martial arts. A full-contact combat sport, MMA is not for everyone, and certainly not for the faint-hearted. So when you see someone practising MMA, the first word that comes to your mind is ‘respect’.
And guess what? We recently found out that ZEE5 Original film Filter Coffee Liquor Cha actor Nishan Nanaiah is training in MMA. In the movie, he plays the role of Subu, a corporate worker from Tamil Nadu who is a chef by passion and eventually goes on to do a cookery show at the insistence of his flatmate Himeli (played by Priyanka Sarkar). Complete opposites in personality, they go on to fall in love. Watch the movie here:
Seeing him in the movie, who would have thought Nishan is into something as challenging as MMA! “I used to have a trainer who used to train me initially when I came to Mumbai. We trained in Juhu beach for 3-4 years. Then I changed my workout and got into Zumba and then power yoga. Now I am back to MMA again,” says Nishan, laughing. Watch him practising MMA in these videos:
The actor says that right now he is attending classes in Versova in Mumbai thrice a week. What does he like about MMA? “It’s an overall body workout. It’s the best cardio workout plus it also takes care of your muscle, core strengthening and flexibility too. On top of that you get to learn self defence which can be very useful,” he points out.
