1. Celebrating at Lord’s
A master batsman, a level-headed leader who nurtured talent and brought up many talented cricketers who have gone on to make India proud — all these things remind us of only one person, Sourav Ganguly. The era of his captainship can be considered among the glory days of the team. And you will definitely agree with the fact that our beloved Dada was among the best captains the team ever had. Be it his impressive decision-making skills or his stern stand as a leader, he made sure to lead the team in the path of victory. As we wait to watch a special episode of Dadagiri Unlimited Season 8, of which he is the host, this Sunday where a lot of his ex-teammates are coming, we got you a recap of the five top moments from the time when Dada was the captain.
When we talk of Dada, who can forget that iconic image of him waving his jersey at the dressing room balcony at Lord’s? While the team managed to enter the finals of 2002 tri-series, Team India was in a fix. After the fall of the first wicket, the chances of winning looked slim. However, thanks to his team selection, the team managed to triumph over England. What followed next was the iconic celebration where Dada roared as he removed his jersey in the Mecca of Cricket — Lord’s.
2. The epic 2001 Kolkata Test win
Who wouldn’t remember the famous 2001 Kolkata Test? That match where the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar bowled a spell which ended up dismissing Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden? While we got to witness the Master Blaster run down the crease to bowl, the batting order of the Kangaroos went for a toss after the fall of these wickets, leading Team India to win the game at the Eden Gardens.
3. Winning the most number of overseas Test matches
Sourav was one of the most successful Indian Test captains to date. Under the captainship of the Prince of Calcutta, Team India had the best run when it comes to test matches. They managed to retain the title of winning the most overseas matches with about 11 wins.
4. Winning the ICC Champions Trophy
Sourav played a key role in Team India’s 2002 ICC Champions Trophy victory. While the tournament didn’t kick off well for the team, under the calm and composed leadership style of Dada, we ended up winning against every single team. In the finals, the team faced against Sri Lanka. However, due to heavy rains, the match couldn’t be completed, thus prompting both the teams to share the cup. However, the game was quite in India’s favour.
5. Lifting the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
The BCCI President announced his retirement and stated that this would be his last tour. Ganguly played in every game of the four-Test series and made sure to drive the team to victory. In the final Test, Mahendra Singh Dhoni invited Sourav to lead the side on the field for the final time. India ended up regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, winning the series 2–0.
While this is but a small list of the magic he brought to Team India, Sourav has always managed to take the best decisions for the team. Even though he is no longer a player, he continues to take be actively involved in cricket administration.
